Ludwig
von Mises Institute |
U.S.A. -
The Ludwig von Mises Institute is the research and educational
center of classical liberalism, libertarian political
theory, and the Austrian School of economics.
The institute was founded by "anti-state, anti-war,
pro-market" Llewellyn H. Rockwell in 1982. The institute
has had the support of Margit von Mises, who chaired
the board until her death in 1993, and such giants as
F.A. Hayek, Lawrence Fertig, Henry Hazlitt, and Murray
N. Rothbard, who headed its academic programs until his
death in 1995. The institute says that it "...has
grown into the leading scholarly center for research
and teaching in the Austrian School of economics, as
well as an important research center for classical
liberalism and libertarianism." The "as
well as" is important, because Ludwig von Mises
was not, in his day, considered to be a libertarian (it
was not a term then commonly used to refer to Capitalists
of the day), and it could be argued that Mises would
not have embraced libertarianism today (for example,
its rejection of a moral code). That said, his economic
ideas are cherished by some libertarians, and have seriously
influenced the economic views of founder Lew Rockwell
and Anarcho-Capitalist spearhead Murray Rothbard, both
of whom are properly referred to as libertarians.
The Ludwig von
Mises has taken over responsibility for publishing
the Journal
of Libertarian Studies. The journal is edited by
anarcho-capitalist/libertarian Professor Hans-Hermann
Hoppe.
