The
Party: It
is not clear whether the New Consensus
Party is anything more than a single person
with a web site. The party has no policies per
se. Rather, it proposes a reform in
the way government is selected. Currently,
the Prime Minister is selected by the Governor
General. By constitutional convention,
the Governor General selects the leader
of the party having the greatest number
of seats. With the advise of the Prime
Minister, the rest of the cabinet is then
appointed. The Consensus proposes, instead,
that:
"...in
a free representative assembly, the prime
minister/premier, the ministers, the speaker
(facilitator) and the members of the standing
committees of the House of Commons/House
of Assembly would be chosen freely by the
members of the House. This elected executive
and the facilitator are then empowered
but controlled by this free democratically
elected legislative assembly."
The purpose
for the restructuring?:
"This
newly structured legislature will use the
energy and intelligence of all the representatives
who will become focused on what is right
and good for all, without the present monstrous
amount of energy, time and partisan rhetoric
used by each political party in its struggle
for the control of government."
